Robotic Knee & Hip Surgery Clinic based at METROPOLITAN GENERAL HOSPITAL in Athens/Greece , has the honor to present a new concept in total knee & hip arthroplasty, SMART TRACK ROBOTICS. As far as we know this is the first announcement in Greece.
This is a very important collaboration of Chief Surgeon and Medical Director, Dr Stavros Alevrogiannis with the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York and the Nuffield Orthopedic Center, Headington, Oxford in Great Britain, regarding improvement of patient’s musculoskeletal health.
In the middle of coronavirus era, a change in philosophy and treatment of the orthopedic patient is required and new data have emerged in both preoperative planning, surgical technique and safe rehabilitation of patients.
Dr. Stavros Alevrogiannis, a selected member of the closed group of European Orthopedics in EKA (European knee Associates) is a pioneer once again, offering his patients the new concept of Smart Track Robotics.
The new concept consists of 4 main pillars:
- Minimally invasive surgical technique (MIS),
- Day hospitalization or even a short stay in the clinic
- Personalized surgical technique
- Specific protocol for robotic measurements of prosthetic materials
Main target of the new concept, is to perform a total knee or hip replacement in a quick manner, with the outmost accuracy in osteotomies and implant insertion, in a safe way, individualized per patient and with the minimum required hospitalization. Patients can walk immediately after the end of the operation, in few days only they are active again, avoid severe pain, avoid any case of inflammation and infection, return home as soon as possible, with minimal pain killers and can take care of themselves without having to burden other family members.
Using minimally invasive techniques, operation is performed through a smaller incision with less bleeding, the wound is smaller, the soft tissue are protected from major damage, ligament stability is ensured in the knee and the recovery time is reduced.
Modern anesthesia techniques (Rapid Recovery Anesthesia) with the use of low toxicity drugs adapted individualized to each patient, alleviate postoperative pain and help patients to be mobilized immediately post-operatively, without any external. In this way hospital discharge occurs only a few hours after surgery or the next day in most of the cases.

Specific measurement software provides our scientific staff with advanced tools to enhance the visualization of complex cases, and the 3D platform helps to improve the quality of preoperative design, aiming for optimal surgical outcome.
The 2D preoperative design allow the surgeon to render standard CT images into a 3D interactive image with the use of specific robotic tools. The 3-dimentional image can be segmented, manipulated, mirrored, drawn, and printed in 3D models.
Specific stereoscopic analysis can enhance understanding of co-existing deformities even in neglected cases of arthritis with axial deformities and extensive osteophytes and lead to a new focus on surgical planning and selection of the appropriate prosthetic implants that suits the anatomic morphology of each patient individually.
In this way, maximum accuracy in both osteotomies and the placement of prosthetic materials is achieved, with the use of Augmented Reality or a Robotic Arm Assistance.
With the new concept, when no prohibitive concomitant disease exist, patient can undergo bilateral knee or hip replacement, as accurate placement and alignment of prosthetic materials, by restoring the mechanical axis of loading and balancing the loads of the body, can be easily achieved.

SMART TRACK ROBOTICS ADVANTAGES
- Minimal incision,
- minimal postoperative scar,
- reduction of muscle destruction,
- eliminate blood loss so that no transfusions are needed,
- reduction of surgical time,
- no catheters and drains
- immediate mobilization & walking due to the integrity of the extensor mechanism.
- minimization of complications (inflammation, thrombophlebitis)
- mental clarity (no dizziness and tendency to vomit)
- minimization of postoperative pain
- 24-hour hospitalization (when there is no other underlying disease).
- personalized (customized) 3D model per patient
- accuracy of femoral and tibial implant placement while at the hip the surgeon guides the placement of implants based on the anatomy of each patient,
- maintenance of bone storage. We keep our bone to the greatest extent. We attach the implant to our bone and not our bone to the implant
- steady knee-steady gait
- keeping bone marrow in excellent condition
- Success in all patients. We do not care about the body type. All, tall or medium height, very high, medium or normal weight have excellent results. correction of imbalance
- eradication of inflammation
- excellent knee & hip function
- maximum patient satisfaction
- long implant survival

A complete file in electronic or non-electronic form which contains the information about the operation, photographic material, robotic measurements, the type of technique, the certification and the material used, will be received by the patient for his personal file, upon his discharge from the clinic.
A personalized rehabilitation protocol (with or without physiotherapy support) is proposed, depending on the patient’s body type and age, but mainly on the rapid integration and management of new “smart” biological materials.
Dr. Alevrogiannis can assess your condition and condition, either in his office or at the Metropolitan General.
