More powerful than ever, returns back to action after the treatment of autologous stem cells on his knee, from Dr. Alevrogiannis, Dimitris Mavroeidis!

Thanks to the innovative treatment, that is now performed in our country from the eminent Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Doctor Dr. Stavros Alevrogiannis and his team, the international basketball player returns stronger and ready for new excellences.


The international basketball player had been injured more than one year ago in the knee and had been subjected to treatment following the conventional methods, without the expected outcome.

Treatment with autologous stem cells

Until recently, in sports injuries the classic treatment methods, that we are all familiar with, applied, were physiotherapies, anti-inflammatory drugs, injections of enzymes, platelet (PRP) and cortisone.

However, over the last years the science’s evolution has overturned the data with modern biological therapies with stem cells. The innovative treatments with stem cells have created a real revolution in the rehabilitation time of injuries and in the safer rehabilitation of athletes back to the level of the athletic activity that had before the injury.


According to Dr. Alevrogiannis, the treatment is divided into two stages. In the first stage, the patient is subjected to a removal of a small piece of fat, with local anesthesia. On the second stage, after approximately 20 days, the activated, with the blood of the same patient, mesenchymal stem cells in the damaged area or joint, either with an injection form or arthroscopically with a specific technique, when the damage is big, are applied.

The protocol is completed with an intravenous administration of other stem cells, within the framework of the organism, since stem cells are a natural process of our body for the handling of injuries. The whole process is completed with the administration of heavy antioxidants and is a simple medical action, since in fact we “push” a process that our own body performs.

The athlete-patient does not have to stay in the clinic, does not use an exterior aid for his/her walking and the treatment is completed with personalized per case physiotherapeutic protocols, by using equipment of cutting edge technology (diamagnetic pump, cryosauna, hyperbaric oxygen etc.).

“In professional athletes, that we have a limited time for the modification and activation of stem cells, but we want a direct intervention and repair, we can use heterologous stem cells (from another donor) or allogenic stem cells, since they do not have antigenic properties and do not cause adverse events, while even better we prefer receiving stem cells from the athlete in the beginning of the sports season, cryopreserve them and have them ready for him/her, for whenever he/she needs them”, the eminent sports doctor explains.

With this way, many sport injuries are treated very quickly and safely, such as muscle spasms, strains, tendinitis, cartilage damages, without surgeries and perioperative complications.

Athletes’ treatment with autologous stem cells is pretty popular abroad, as Dr. Alevrogiannis mentions. In fact, famous football players have been subjected to treatment with stem cells abroad, such as Diego Costa of Atlético Madrid, Van Persi of Manchester United, Frank Lampard of Chelsea with spectacular results. Moreover, during recent Mundial, after his recent muscle injury, the ace of the Argentina national football team, Di Maria is currently subjected to a stem cell therapy. In the past he had also been subjected to advanced cell therapies with stem cells with great success.

Sports injuries are more frequent, than we think!

In contact sports, 22% of the athletes, regardless of the sport and level of exercise, are injured for at least once in a year. 42% of these injuries concern muscle injuries and muscle strains. 60% of them take place during the game and especially on the second halftime, while 48% take place during the second half of the championship, which means that the fatigue is a very important predisposition factor. The lack of muscle relaxation, the constant games, the long hour training’s, the insufficient warming up, the bad physical condition and nutrition, are also responsible for the muscle fatigue and strains.
